About Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Cage-Fighting. “UFC” Fighting. MMA is tagged with a number of popular names in the UK. Born as recently as 1993, it grew out of the concept of pitting different combat sports against each other in a quest to discover the ultimate martial arts style. In the beginning there were no weight classes and very few rules. Today, MMA has evolved into a style of its own, comprising the wrestling and striking disciplines that proved most successful in the original “ultimate fighter” contests, including Brazilian jiu jitsu (a Brazilian form of ground wrestling), Olympic wrestling and Thai boxing. Now too, most of the world follows by general consensus the regulatory rules of US state athletic commissions, the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. This highly technical and spectacular sport has come a long way in a short time: only the toughest, fittest and most dedicated of athletes can endure the hours of training over many years to master the multiple combat disciplines required to be an MMA fighter.
