With Rhys ‘Skeletor’ McKee having been crowned the BAMMA Lightweight Champion, in this article we take a look at the possible pretenders to the throne…
The Rubber Match – Tim Barnett and McKee currently sit at 1-1 in matches against each other. Both times they have fought it has been over a Lightweight Title, and this is one series of fights that fans would love to see an epic conclusion to.
The Welterweight King – Terry 'The Dominator' Brazier is the current BAMMA World Welterweight Champion and has made noises that he would like to make the move to the Lightweight division and take on the newly crowned Champion McKee. McKee has welcomed the challenge and has also expressed a desire to move up to the Welterweight division to take on Brazier. McKee is no stranger to the Welterweights, as he made his pro debut there on short notice against John ‘Johnny Jitzu’ Redmond. However, both Champions may need to defend their titles before this potential mega fight could happen.
The Rising Phoenix – After taking a few years out, Steve ‘The Spartan’ O’Keefe has returned to the European MMA scene with a bang. Having won all three of his bouts since returning via first round stoppages, there are many people who believe that O’Keefe should be first in line when McKee makes his defence of the title.
The Irish Legend - You can’t have a conversation about title contenders without the name Paul ‘Redser’ Redmond coming up into the mix. The 8 year veteran has already fought for the BAMMA Lightweight title in a match that many thought he won, against McKee’s training partner ‘Stormin’ Norman Parke. Most recently Redmond beat the former BAMMA Champion Rob ‘C4’ Sinclair in a a bout that further raised his stock in the title contender frame. This is a fight that would create huge attention if it were to take place in either Belfast or Dublin, and one that all fans would get excited about.
The Young Gun – When Akonne ‘Jedi” Wanliss signed on the dotted line with BAMMA ahead of his pro debut, people were already taking about The Jedi as a future Champion. And while that talk is a bit premature with Wanliss making his debut at BAMMA 35, the world is potentially about to witness whether the hype around the latest Lightweight sensation is justified. With a lot of parallels between Wanliss and McKee, this is a possible future fight if McKee manages to retain the title and remain as Champion.
The Grudge Match - ‘Magic’ Myles Price has previously been matched against McKee, but the match has yet to come to fruition. With the verbal barbs being slung at each other at regular intervals, this matchup has a built in history built that could tear the arena down if they were to ever meet across the cage. With Price set to return at BAMMA 35 in Dublin, could this be the spark that reignites the touch paper to this particular clash?
