Ahead of a return to Dublin’s 3 Arena on May 12th, BAMMA has acquired an exciting addition to the welterweight division in former Irish ISKA K1 and Thai boxing champion, Karl McCallig. Having fought in Asia in his last three fights, a return to home soil for BAMMA 35 is a welcome option, “It will be great to fight back in Dublin after my recent trips to Asia to compete. I’m looking to make my presence felt immediately in BAMMA”.
Having made the transition to MMA, McCallig made the decision to base himself out of SBG Tallaght. Under the guidance of head coach Dave Roche and boxing coach Justin Johnson, McCallig has joined a stable rich in talent ahead of his mixed martial arts debut.
With many fighters from a striking background now crossing over to MMA, Karl’s feels his Thai boxing background gives him an edge over other combat sports, “Thai boxing is a big advantage over kickboxing or boxing, as unlike kickboxing, the shins and legs are far more conditioned from low kicks and shin on shin shots”.
BAMMA has firmly established its place amongst the top promotions in Europe, a fact that influenced McCallig’s decision when exploring promotional options ahead of his MMA debut, “BAMMA is the top promotion in Europe. For me it was a no brainer really to sign with BAMMA and debut on the big stage”.
With May 12th fast approaching, McCallig exudes confidence ahead of his debut in front of his hometown fans, “I’m coming to make a statement. This will be a first round knockout to announce my arrival in BAMMA. Don’t blink”.
